Eid Mubarak!

2009 September 20
by vandeput

The Ramadhan (wikipedia) has already over for this year. 20th September 2009 is the Idul Fitri, the Indonesian term for Eid ul-Fitr (wikipedia).

Usually people will go back to their hometown or “mudik” in Indonesian term. I am one of people who do not “mudik” for these three years already. Main reason of it is because it is at the middle of my semester so it is quite hard to pack the things, at least for me :)

Now, this is my message for this occasion:

“Selamat Hari Raya!” – Happy Day of Celebration!
“Saya Mohon Maaf Lahir dan Batin.” – I ask forgiveness physically and spiritually.

Before I forget, to end this post, I would recommended you to see photos recommendation linked from a post by AppleGeeks creator, Hawk. Warning, it is B4, “Bandwith Bomb But Beautiful” and maybe it will open up your mind a bit, escpecially about Islam :D

Nine and Armageddon

2009 September 9
by vandeput

This morning Aldi, my roommate, reminded me that today’s date is quite unique: It is 9th September 2009. “It is 09.09.09″, he said. I already reminded when yesterday I read the post at Kaskus (an Indonesian Forum) about launching of Indoor Theme Park at Makassar by Trans Studio (a Indonesian TV Station) and they choose quite unique date in hope of great success.

Aldi remind me about something more interesting that came from our elementary school. Yes, it is “our”, because Aldi has been in the same school with me since elementary school: What a fate ^__^. It is kinda blur, but Aldi still remember that it was also at 9th September, but the year wass 1999.

There were Armageddon prediction floating around at Indonesia (ranging cause from Krakatau Mountain’s explosion to the classic The-Meteor-Hit-The-Earth). Well, we were elementary students at that time, so we did believe that prediction a bit.

We are asking forgiveness from each other then our teachers stopped the lesson for a while at 9AM. Of course the world did not end at that time, even though the time already over 9AM. Even after that 9 minutes has passed. Even after that 9 seconds has passed. The world is safe again, maybe Superman already destroyed the meteor.

I tried to find the articles about Armageddon at that year, but all I can only found is “At 9th September 1999 Sega released the Dreamcast video game console worldwide”. Well, that is not enough to destroy the world :)

This year there are some of the movements with the theme of 09.09.09. There is one who collecting stories all around the world about anything happened at 9th September 2009 to publish it in one book. There is also one who collecting the “peace photo” taken at 9th September 2009 (and quite precise 09.09.09+09GMT@09:09 o_O). There is also one who celebrating the date because it is the same with their name: NINE FM.

Ganda Ilmana, my friend from Senior High School, has a birthday today. Even my president’s birthday is today! Happy Birthday! I hope you are becoming wiser everyday ^__^

PS: This date somehow reminded me with the speech at Public Speaking class to inform about New Seven Wonders of the World: that one is announced at 07.07.07.

Job and Study

2009 September 8
by vandeput

My dormitory is cleaned everyday by workers that are paid by my university via contract with worker company. While I stay at the dormitory, I greet them and they greet me back. Some of the workers are very friendly and greet me and my friends first. Sometimes we got some wisdom from them, like advice about cleaning and garbage. Sometimes they give us the fruits they got from the tree around the dormitory. They are really kind to us.

This morning I meet the first worker that I met at the first semester, an aged woman. She acts kindly, like a mom to me and my friends. She asked me about my friend who postponed this semester. I told her that he went back to Indonesia because he got a job there and he want to try it. She disagrees with my friend’s decision, because she thinks students should finish their study before they look for the job.

Talking about it, I has an opinion about students in university. About one week ago, at 30th August 2009, I gave speech in Public Speaking class to inform about my experience on International Scientific Olympiad on Mathematics (ISOM) 2009. My introduction is an overview about what should the students do in the university. I improvise a bit on the speech, but here is part of draft about it. It is not grammatically correct because it is only an outline, I hope it is read-able:

There are many opinions regarding what should a university student should do and need to do. Should they study only? No. Other activities beside study: organization, networking, or even competition.

For example is myself. I has join some of organizations, meet people (even though I forgot most of them), and join that ISOM 2009 competition. One of the organization is AIESEC (LC UUM), which their main activity is exchanging students around the world to do volunteer project or internship with company.

I have planned last holiday to go volunteering, but there are some obstacles I cannot overcome in time. Of course, I have not give up yet, so I am planning to take internship next time. This time, it is to fill my graduation requirement that I must be an intern for a company.

I think all students are doing many things beside study like me, in fact I have seen many students who are doing more things than me with better study results!

Back to the conversation about my friend who postponed his study, I told her that maybe he just want to get job experience, because it is very hard to get the job, so why miss the chance? She expressed her concern that he will forgot the study. Well, I also have the same worry.

Some of my friends did not go to university because they got a job before it. The last one I met at holiday already has married, has a car, and has a house! Of course, their world is quite different from me, whose course go to university:

“You should study properly, pray regularly, and be straight – do not join weird activities” – My Dad

Now you know why I persist to always go to the class :D

Campaign “Start Your Week by Spirit!”

2009 September 7
by vandeput

Some of people in the world start their week in Sunday, like me while I study at Malaysia. Some of other people in the world start their week in Monday, like Arina Ariyani at Indonesia. Some of another people in the world even start in Saturday, like in Swahili language, which I need to remember to ask to some of my friends who speak it. I have asked my friend from Kenya and it is really true that they end their week at Friday.

Anyway, I will refer to current International Standard for Date and Time by ISO, stumbled upon a Yahoo! Answer about the start of week which in conclusion say that “Monday shall be the first day of the week.”

With that clarified, now let’s move on to the campaign “Start Your Week by Spirit!”. Actually it is a simple message, originally dedicated to customer of Vandeput co., that I have decided is worth enough to share in this blog:

Well, is this your beginning of the study week? If yes, then have your spirit packed and ready to go!

Thus this is the end of my presentation. I hope you guys pack your spirit! :D

Eliza Testing

2009 September 6
by vandeput

I just read Arina Ariyani’s blog post about her friend’s love, then it reminds me to an XKCD comic about chatting with advertisement bot talking love. That leads me to AI-bot ELIZA. Ah, how nostalgic. When I am still at high-school, one of my time is invested to learn Artificial Intelligence (AI: wikipedia article), so I can make one that will be my friends. Like all my other investments, this one is also forgotten in middle of way, since I am more interested to make Imaginary Friends (IF: wikipedia article), which is another story for another time ^__^

Ok, now I found ELIZA, I want to consult with her about my love. Below is the transcript of the conversation:
Eliza: Hello. I am ELIZA. How can I help you?
You: I am in love with someone
Eliza: How long have you been in love with someone?
You: Since I met her, about 4 years ago.
Eliza: Can you elaborate on that?
You: Which one do you want me to elaborate?
Eliza: Oh, i want you to elaborate.
You: I don’t understand
Eliza: Why do you not understand?
You: You want me to elaborate but you don’t tell me which one I need to elaborate!
Eliza: Oh, i dont tell you which one you need to elaborate.
You: So please tell one.
Eliza: Please go on.
You: If I don’t have any directive, I don’t want to go on.
Eliza: Do you wish that you dont have any directive you dont want to go on?
You: No I don’t want. Seems this conversation is heading nowhere. I need to go. Bye.
Eliza: You are being a bit negative.
You: Yes I am :)
Eliza: You are sure?
You: Of course.
Eliza: Please go on.
You: Bye.
Eliza: Please go on.

Well, she did say “Please go on” twice. So I am going on… out :D

PS: I still dreaming that “The bot is actually alive, but it is faking their innocent”, somehow…

Some Personal Questions

2009 September 5
by vandeput

The only blog that I always check for update is giving me a list of personal questions. It is part of Indonesian bloggers chain-award that has 3 tasks to do: Putting some awards at the blog, tagging friends, then answering the questions.

For the first task, I excuse myself to not do that because I don’t feel I am good enough to get any awards at all. Then come the second task that I also will excuse myself to not do that because I dislike chain-scheme. I am not against the spirit, it is just that I don’t get the meaning of it. In another words, I don’t understand that kind of social things to do.

The third task is quite easy and in respect to the person who tagging me, I will answer it. I will translate it to English and answer it with English of course:

1st Question ) Five things found in Irvan Putra’s bag:
a) Notebook with charger plus extension cable,
b) Thumb-drive inside glasses-case,
c) Books with a lot of papers,

5th Question ) Five things currently do: Undergraduate study, University organizations participation, Become Good Friend, Reading Online Mangas plus WebComic, and Self Learning.

6th Question ) The person inspired Irvan Putra now: My family, My friends, and Arina Ariyani :)

7th Question ) Handphone details: Nokia 5310 ExpressMusic which I got from my Papa, with default blue theme, wallpaper is the photo that I choose -now is Perlis Beach-, casing default black with case, , language English, full batery capacity -always bring the charger inside the bag-, memory card extra -which has no song at all, only few photos- ~125MB, bluetooth capability -but my notebook is not >_<-, favourite application of course Opera Mini, sim-card Digi at Malaysia then Simpati at Indonesia, number +6016480**** and +628137339****.

Done, at last, hohoho :D

Nothing to Post

2009 September 4
by vandeput

Actually there are so many things happening to me in meat-world since last post, but I just cannot find words long enough to fill in a post. There is actually nothing to post, at least for me.

Ah, actually I did has an activity that people said is a good experience. I was part of the my campus team to go to International Scientific Olympiad on Mathematics 2009. Guess where it is? It is at Iran. There is an interesting article from my team leader that summarizes everything.

Now those above are only two paragraph. What next? Oh, today, 4th September 2009, I am 20 years old. It is my birthday. I am currently replying the Facebook messages that I got from my friends. Thank you friends, love you so much! ^___^

I guess that is all for today. It is fasting month now and I cannot think clearly without any snacks :p

Regards,

Irvan Putra.

Strings and Game Theory

2009 May 22
by vandeput

Let me start this post with an announcement, because what we must begin with open-minded, we must finish with open-minded:

status.change(from:’In Relationship’,to:’Single’);

Don’t worry, this post will not be long :)

When I am thinking about the lifeline of people, I remember the strings at future Hiro Nakamura’s house (HEROES reference, season 1). I agree with the theory that each person has it’s own lifeline and when they meet there will be the junction, then the strings will be at each other.

In eastern mythology there is the “red string of fate”. In western mythology there is the witch who can know the people’s fate by the strings. (I kinda love it when they make the film about it, named “Wanted”. Warning though, the film is about the person whose job to kill someone.)

In science, the smallest form of nature (which is smaller than molecule) is string (see string theory). What a coincidence, huh?

That is about the strings. Game theory is another thing. The hypothesis is when people are not believing in other, they will only choose the option which make the best outcome only for themselves. However, the rules of the game is when each people are only thinking about themselves, the outcome will be the worst. That is why there is a war.

In another way, though, when people are thinking about others, believing in the promise, the rules dictated that the outcome will be the best. That is the only condition of peace.

The problem is at the rule. The theory is nice that providing the “nice rule”. What if it is the other way around? What if the rule is bad, that there is no advantage of following it? With my experience just now, the people who are believing in each other will not follow the rule. They will break it. They will do it by their own rule.

We are in state of grasping our own rule.

Now, let me end this post with a reminder to myself, because what we must begin with an out-of-the box thinking, we must finish with an out-of-the box thinking:

Chemistry

2009 May 8
by vandeput

When I was at senior high school, I had a desk-mate (actually we can change the desk-mate, but I forgot why I always choose to sit with him) who really like chemistry. We really love science and we both love Yu-Gi-Oh! battle card game. That guy even have tried to go to Olympiad of chemistry and gain enough fame for that.

However, they are differences among us of course. He can remember things easily, that’s why he can excel in chemistry. I am a bit jealous over that, but he is my role model for study hard (not that now I am doing that, people keep advice me to study smart, hm~ maybe I should start with study first? Haha :D ).

One of the my senior high school chemistry teachers is on holiday now. Her name is Bu Wyd (“Bu” as “Madam”, I think?). I don’t have the cakes that she asked me and I am still at Malaysia now, so I can only give this post for Bu Wyd. Happy Birthday, Bu Wyd ^__^

She is from “Bangka”, the same islands my parents come from. Other than teacher, she is journalist, I respect her for that, since I have tried writing article and it is really hard (She even has blogs (Indonesian and English one) and her articles are really great!). I still remember the “Thinking Club” I joined had some problem with her “Journalist Club” because the target market is the same. I love the “Marella”, the school’s magazine, which her club made. The last but not the least, she seems to like chemistry, I like her teaching because she shows she care what she teach. Though she looks like a scary person :p

Up until now, I still have chemistry in my dream list, sort like making it is interesting to study with the presentation of the molecule and we know how to manipulate it. If mathematics has Wolfram’s Mathematicia, biology has Spore, physic has Yohannes Surya (the Indonesian Olympiad team manager), why not chemistry? Chemistry has its own beauty :)

Once again, Happy Birthday Bu Wyd, hope you become more wise everyday (n_n)

The Power of Procrastination

2009 May 3
by vandeput

I have promised myself and many people, that I will update this blog regularly. Clearly, I failed to do so, in reason just because I am too lazy to connect to creative world and internet this semester… I am sorry if I have make disappointment for many people on my commitment m(_ _)m.

Then it seems I got the karma. Because I do not fill up my DeviantArt account (which is very empty that I will not link that for now), do not active again at Freakhigh and VnProject, and even in the PPI UUM’s new club I joined (PANDA), I have not made any graphical works yet that I can show up to the company oversea, which make me fail to get their approval to their country.

The facts that I am helping MPP UUM’s new website (mpp.uum.edu.my), managing PPI UUM’s website (that greatly changed by my vice president, which is cool…), or even joining SIFE UUM; those facts are not helping at all, because I do it half heartly. I will blame the great films, comics, and games spawning around internet, if the blaming does not make me like a kid actually.

Oh, btw, I have homework from Putrijump’s request. The questions are simple, but I must have the pictures from Google Images front-page. I decided to download and re-upload the image, so if I have offend the owner of the image, please kindly tell me and I will remove it.

Now I want to at least finish the homework given by one Putrijump
